Administrative Structure of the Nigerian Police and Functions
The administrative structure of the Nigeria police is divided into seven departments with special functions and duties. The departments are from A to G.
Below is the functions of the Administrative department of the Nigerian police.
- A Department: serves as the administrative unit of the force, coordinates and supervises the remaining departments that exists in the Nigeria Police.
- B Department: monitors internal security activities and operations all over the nation.
- C Department: deals on logistics and supply of equipment used in the operations of the Nigerian Police. Uniforms, weapons, guns, batons, e.t.c.
- D Department: deals with matters related to criminal investigation and intelligence, homicide, forensic matters and records, narcotics e.t.c.
- E Department: This is the training unit of the Nigerian Police. Training like coupling of weapons (guns and ammunition), equipment training, field training, riot quelling e.t.c.
- F Department: deals with information management and planning. They are the Inspectorate Division of the NPF.
- G Department: ICT department of the Nigeria police that deals with all computer related matters and policies.
Chain of Command in the Nigerian Police
The Nigeria Police has a well organised chain of command. With different stations situated around the country, the policies and programms of the Inspection General of Police on effective policing is sure to reach the grassroots. The office of the IGP is situated in Abuja, Force Headquarters, Louis Eden House.
There are also 6 zonal headquarters of the Nigerian police located in each geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Although, each state of the federation have their own State Command Headquarters controlled by the Commissioner of Police, their is also the presence of the Area Command Headquarters that oversees the activities of the Divisional Police Headquarters who in turn supervises the smaller Police stations in the country.
Finally, there is also a small unit of the police station in Nigeria called the Police Post or the Village police post. They are mostly found in the rural areas and villages.
